Q: So what you have been up to since Kollab?
A: Since Kollaboration, I’ve traveled to a lot to shows in different cities. Went out to California to San Francisco and Los Angeles. It was my first time back there since I was a kid. Went to Comic Cons, met people, which is the really great thing about going to these kinds of events. Then I went to Charlotte, Houston, back to Atlanta … I’ve been working on my next mixtape, which is set to release in the fall, and doing some more song writing as well as long-form poetry and prose.
Q: How do you about your winning performance looking back? Have you watched any of the footage?
I actually don’t like watching myself or reading any of the interviews that I do; I just don’t enjoy it. I still have stage fright! When it comes to performances, I just want it to be done. It is the worst kind of torture [watching myself]. I’m weirdly self-conscious like that.
Q: Can we ask what you’ve done with the $1,000 grand prize?
I’ve mostly used it to travel to other cities. I allowed myself one pair of cool sneaks. Paid off some rent. When you’re starting out in music, it helps to be familiar before getting callbacks. It means going to shows no matter who is there, and treat them the same. Some shows are good and some are bad, but it’s about getting out there because exposure is the best thing to do.
Q: What’s the next step?
After [this studio session in Atlanta], I’ll go to Savannah to see some friends, then to Charlotte, do one show in July, and then take a long break to catch up on writing and figuring out the next step. I just don’t want to travel! It’d be nice to see friends, relax, exercise, eat a full balanced meal for once, and enjoy the summer. When you’re a freelance creative, sometimes you have to force yourself to stop working.
Q: How’s the studio session going so far?
It’s my first studio session in a place like this, so it’s really rare for me. John [Song] is awesome. We’ve been in touch [getting things together] and he’s been really good about giving me feedback on everything. We’ll probably work together more in the future.
