On Wed. Oct 27, the Kollaboration Atlanta staff was invited to a screening for “Vincent Who?”, a documentary created by renowned producer, Curtis Chin. The short film conveyed the true story of Vincent Chin, an innocent man who was brutally murdered by two racist men because of his Asian identity. These men also never served a single day in prison for their wrongdoings. Despite this horrific incident, one of the first Asian-American identity and civil rights movement emerged.
The documentary was followed by a panel discussion of community leaders:
Curtis Chin (Producer of “Vincent Who?”)
Norman Chu (President, OCA-Georgia)
David Furukawa (President, Japanese American Citizens League – Southeast Chapter)
Farooq Soomro (President, American Asian Heritage Foundation)
Cam T. Ashling (Chairwoman, Asian American Legal Advocacy Center).
The discussions revolved around questions and suggestions on what the community can do stop incidents like this from happening again, how to link the older and younger generations of Asian-Americans in the Atlanta community and how to empower Asians to step up and fight for justice. For those who missed the screening, Curtis Chin will be back in Atlanta in April 2011 for additional screenings.
